Nearly 1,000 years ago a stout, high-prowed vessel from Greenland cast anchor in an inviting bay somewhere on the coast of North America. Its single sail was unfurled, and the 30-man crew stepped ashore. Lush meadows sheltered by forests covered the ground. When the tide was out, the entire bay became land. The streams teemed with salmon, and the climate was so mild the grass stayed green in winter.

This was Leif Ericon’s first contact with the continent of North America.

Newfoundland and Labrador, away from the warp and woof of the world, has preserved centuries-old language and music. Tiny villages peopled by ancestors from England still use words and expressions from Shakespeare’s day.
